For Trump most things come down to a deal lubricated by money. It seems that the purpose of Witkoff and Kushner is to find Putin’s financial price or trade-sanctions-deal price for abandoning his claim to 20% of Donbas that Putin’s never-ending war has negligently failed to capture. By stressing peace negotiations, Putin has foolishly put himself in the position of being the obstacle by refusing to compromise on territorial claims.  Why Putin would put himself into such an unpromising position is hard to understand.
