In the years since I wrote this article, we have watched Americans lose the protection of the First Amendment when it comes to the criticism and protest of Israeli policies. Students who protest against the Israeli genocide of Palestine are expelled from their universities. Foreign students are expelled from the US. Americans in 38 states who boycott Israel cannot be employed by their state governments or have contracts with the states. Trump has given us a Federal Anti-semitism Czar at work criminalizing criticism of Israel. The Constitution’s protections of Americans disappear day by day.
Protections against being criticized and protested are being extended to the US Government. War protesters are being lumped in with “domestic terrorists,” just as the January 6 protesters were imprisoned as “insurrectionists.” Presidents George W. Bush, Obama, Biden, Trump took the oath of office by swearing to uphold and defend the US Constitution and promptly deep-sixed it. Nothing happened to them. Despite violating their oath, they remained in office and the assault on the US Constitution by governments sworn to protect it continues. The regimes tell us that their destruction of the Constitution that protects us will protect us.
